My great grandparents settled in Omena area and built a farm on about 100 acres around 1855-1860. Their last name was Novotny and a road next to the farm was named after them. Upon the death of my great uncle, his nephew Joe Barressi took over and the farm became a cherry orchard. My family always enjoyed visiting the farm and Omena.

This area will always be close to my heart. Memories of riding my bike down to the beach, and stopping in to say Hello to Sunny in the store. Some of the best days of my life were spent living up on the hill. The beauty of the area still astounds me to this day. How I long to someday return if even just to visit.

I am 52 years old and the the oldest son of William Vern Dewar, who was born in Omena in December of 1930. He was the oldest son of Vern and Beulah Mae(Putnam)Dewar. Beulah was the oldest daughter of John Edward Putnam and Anna(Egeler)Putnam. My Great-Grandfather Putnam was an active farmer in the Omena area until he retired at the age of 80. I remember many summers visiting the farm and swimming in Omena Bay. Beulah's sisters (my Great Aunts) were Elizabeth (Putnam) Gill Markham, Edna (Putnam) Raftshol, Margaret (Putnam) Rolfe, Doris (Putnam) Wick, Rhea (Putnam) Solle Christie, and Mary Putnam Adelson. My Great Grandfather John Edward Putnam, before he went to a career of farming, was a partner owner of a store in Provemont (Lake Leelanau) with Ed Egeler until the store burned to the ground in March of 1912. We're hoping to visit the area this September!

My Mother, Kathryn, was a good friend of Mrs. Gordon "Sis" Solle, who owned the famous Solle's Bookstore in Omena. I spent several enjoyable summers in Omena as a child in the 1950's and early 1960's. My cousins now own a summer condo in nearby Sutton's Bay, so I will be coming back!

Our parents took us to Omena in the late '40's and early '50's. This August my family vacationed on Omena Point Road and I was thrilled to be able to say to them that Omena hasn't changed in all this time, other than the new restaurant/wine tasting building which I remember as a gas station. We'll be back.

I've been visiting Omena ever since I was a child. My maternal grandmother Mary Agosa & a bunch of cousins are interred at Hillside Cemetery, & my mother with her sisters down the road in Peshawbestown. My favorite spot in Omena is the local beach, just off the bend in M-22, one of the best beaches in the world. Great place to park, get your feet wet, cool off on a hot Omena Bay afternoon, and enjoy the view. Will someone please post a modern picture of this? The name of my website was actually coined by old Andrew Porter back in 1859. I use it for its historical and humorous value, I have no hard feelings about it. The many descendants of that Frenchman are still around Omena, and as ignorant as ever! BTW I tried to contact the Webmaster at jmille69@san.rr.com and the message was returned as having an invalid address.

Omena has an amazing history. There were many Civil War Veterans from the small villages including the Indians serving in Co. K. of the MI Sharpshooters, The Lakeshore Tigers of the 26th Michigan, and several famed officers including summer visitor, General George A. Custer. I featured much of it in my book "Forest haven Soldiers" http://www.eparks.com/eparks/product.asp? id=107146&park=275 and in the up-coming book, "The Lakeshore Tigers." http://groups.yahoo.com/group/26thMI/

I certainly enjoyed seeeing your website. My family spent our summer vacations in Omena when I was a child, where we stayed at a relatives house. I revisted a few years ago and have very fond memories of the area. The amazing part is that it really hasn't changed much since I was a kid, which is rare. I hope it remains that way! Alan Wagner

Hi. I love the great picture of Omena in the old days! Is this picture in a history book that is available to be purchased? Is the Anderson store related to George Anderson of Northport? It seems I read that once. (?) I am 58 years old now and I have been going up to Leelanau County since I was about 9. Iam interested in history throughout Michigan. I love seeing the picture of Omena! Thankyou , Gael Tryles
