Perfect Omena Day

“Perfect Omena Day!” Selections from the Summer Diaries of Rebecca L. Richmond, 1907-1920,” edited by M. Christine Hardcover, $33
Rebecca L. Richmond’s diaries were written in Omena, Michigan, where she owned two cottages. She lived in Grand Rapids, where she was well known for charitable gifts. Rebecca’s uncle, Abel T. Page, promoted Omena as an ideal resort community. In 1897, she built a cottage on Omena Point and named it “Bonnie Banks.” In 1907, she purchased the adjacent cottage, “Camp Lookout.” Her active social life included two cousins, Libby Bacon Custer, wife of General George Custer, and painter Frederick Stuart Church. She writes about leisurely daily activities, visits from friends and relatives, local events, and nature. Never married, she traveled by train from Grand Rapids several times during the warm months, often accompanied by friends.
